asociadas con la remoci\u00f3n de la materia org\u00e1nica, y bajo ciertas condiciones, tambi\u00e9n la materia nitrogenada; tienen lugar en el reactor biol\u00f3gico o c\u00e1mara de aireaci\u00f3n. La biomasa o microbiolog\u00eda se desarrolla utilizando el sustrato presente en el efluente crudo. La decantaci\u00f3n de los s\u00f3lidos (biomasa) que tiende a la clarificaci\u00f3n del efluente tratado, ocurre en el decantador secundario. Gran parte de los s\u00f3lidos que decantan hacia el fondo del clarificador son recirculados (recirculaci\u00f3n de lodos), de manera de mantener una concentraci\u00f3n de biomasa en el reactor, la cual es responsable de la alta eficiencia de estos sistemas. La otra parte de los s\u00f3lidos (exceso de lodos) es purgado del sistema para mantener el mismo en equilibrio.<br \/>La biomasa que es separada en el decantador secundario, lo hace debido a sus caracter\u00edsticas de floculaci\u00f3n y sedimentaci\u00f3n. Esto es producto de la generaci\u00f3n de material gelatinoso que favorece la aglutinaci\u00f3n de bacterias, protozoarios, y otros microorganismos responsables de la remoci\u00f3n de la materia org\u00e1nica en flocs macrosc\u00f3picos.<\/p><p>Como resultado de la recirculaci\u00f3n de lodos, la concentraci\u00f3n de s\u00f3lidos suspendidos en un reactor de un proceso de lodos activados es muy alta. Es estos procesos el tiempo de detenci\u00f3n hidr\u00e1ulica del l\u00edquido es corto, del orden de horas, lo que suele estar acompa\u00f1ado por un reactor de tama\u00f1o reducido. Sin embargo, los s\u00f3lidos (biomasa) permanecen en el sistema por un tiempo m\u00e1s prolongado que el hidr\u00e1ulico, debido a la recirculaci\u00f3n. Si estos tuvieran permitido un crecimiento infinito, podr\u00edan alcanzar tales concentraciones en el tanque de aireaci\u00f3n que impedir\u00eda la transferencia de ox\u00edgeno a todas las c\u00e9lulas.\u00a0<\/p><p>Adem\u00e1s, que el decantador ser\u00eda sobrepasado en su capacidad de manejar s\u00f3lidos, dificultando la sedimentaci\u00f3n y parte de los s\u00f3lidos podr\u00edan perderse con el efluente tratado, deteriorando la calidad de efluente final. Para mantener el sistema en un \u00f3ptimo balance, es necesario remover la misma cantidad de biomasa que se reproduce.
