Aparte de tener un poder desinfectante y oxidante superior al cloro, el ClO2 no reacciona con el agua, ni se combina con la materia org\u00e1nica que \u00e9sta pueda contener, con lo cual se consigue que con su uso no se generen trihalometanos (THM).
